There's lots of relief efforts going on, even right now they are airlifting families who are stranded. Many people have donated food and blankets to help those affected and anyone able to help or donate should contact City of Johannesburg Disaster Management on +2711-375-6009

Thanks for this level-headed take on a subject not often covered in photo-blogs.

Personally I feel that seeking criticism online is a bit of a waste of time. As you say, there are 'forumites' who are obsessed with tiny technical details and completely overlook the aesthetics of a photograph.

At the other end of the scale are those whose comments are of the 'Hey', 'Wow', 'Cool', 'That's amazing' variety (usually with liberal use of capitals and exclamation marks), applied to the most dreadful rubbish. This seems to happen a lot on Flickr. Again, a waste of time.

Cheers, and thanks again.

Good article Mitch. I am re thinking and re studying HDR and what it means. Why do we need to do it in the first place and I need to understand how digital works compared to film and what are the pros and cons. Agree there is far too much over processing. Leads me onto how incredible our eyes are how our eyes don't react in a linear manner unlike digital sensors. Good stuff Mitch keep em coming

If that was a fuel dumped from a moving rocket, how does the outer most layer has got the same form and length but just like expanded in a form of wave. Second and the third inner waves as well having the same uniform shape! Lets think guys. if it was fuel in liquid form, at that height would be in solid form, why the outer layers are in front of the rocket? or is rocket moving forward and backward to form these waves?

Cover up!

Hi there,

perhaps you know the answer to my question.

I saw something fitting the descriptions of the ISS, flying over East London (on the south east coast of South Africa) on 18 Feb 2010 at approximately between 20:05 and 20:08 (about these datas I am very sure because I have a video clip of it with this date and a time of 20:07 stamped on that digital record). I think the flight-direction might have been roughly south-east across the horizen. To my understanding, it appeared as if the object was in the earth's atmosphere, but it probably was not. It looked brighter than the brightest star in the sky and moved quite fast, definately not an aeroplane. It was very beautiful and intriguing.

Could someone perhaps relate whether the ISS or other similar kind of object was indeed crossing the night-sky of SA on this date / time?

Thank you!

All I want to say is remember and forget the technique at the same time.
Take your photos from your heart. Tapping into the heart of Africa will bring your photos to a whole new level.

Your information is WAY too valuable to giving away for free like this. Most will not understand and those that do will spend little time in application.

The most effective means to publish information on the future of photography - this type of detailed image creation - need be done on a basis where folks have to pay dearly to understand as the value will be placed in a way that will force those that participate to push the technique and create the value the images deserve.

Every year I go to this wildlife photographer exhibition at the Natural History Museum, and every year I come out feeling I've gotten more than my money's worth. I don't even own an SLR or take many pictures myself, but its just so amazing to see amazing photos of animals from around the world.

My favourite so far is the one of the wolf standing in the middle of a snow covered field. There's a reprint of that image on this page: http://www.london-insider.co.uk/2010/01/photography-exhibition-exposes-where-the-whild-things-are/

Can't wait to see next year's winning entries.
